This Saturday, September 4th, we are hosting an official afterparty for the North Coast Music Fest featuring The New Mastersounds and Family Groove Company. Admission is $15 with a North Coast Music Fest ticket.
The New Mastersounds are a four piece jam band made up of Eddie Roberts on guitar, Simon Allen on drums Pete Shan on bass and Joe Tatton on keys. They have been playing together since they released their first rehearsal as a single in 2000. They have brought their unique hybrid of funk, jazz and soul all over the world, touring the U.S., France, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Japan.
Check out the video below to see The New Mastersounds do what they do best in the studio:
Family Groove Company is self-described as “groove-informed jazz/rock from Chicago.” They combine the sensibility developed by funk/jazz crossover artists like Herbie Hancock and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, with thoughtful songwriting that takes cues from the likes of Steely Dan and the Beatles.
This video shows what FGC has been up to this summer:
We always love it when artists who have upcoming shows here get some lovin’ in the press and on the internet. There is so much to keep up with these days, so we thought we would let you know about some cool features on J. Roddy (playing here 9/22 with Alberta Cross & Dead Confederate) in Spin Magazine.
Spin write a great “Breaking Out” article introducing J. Roddy Walston and The Business that you can read here. They even have an exclusive mp3 of the song “I Don’t Wanna Hear It,” which you can download for free here. The song’s southern-fried classic rock shuffle will sound right at home reverberating off of the back walls here at Double Door. Catch the band here before they get all huge ‘n stuff. If you dig the tune, check out the show details below:

One of the cool things about this period of waiting for summer to end and fall to begin is we book a lot of local shows during the week. Whether the shows are in our basement Dirtroom bar or on the main stage, there will be a lot of local talent coming through our Double Doors. Here are some notable bands playing this week:
Conrad Richards – Thursday, 8/26
Conrad Richards claims to have written over 800 songs and poems. He has been playing and recording music in his basement studio for years. In the last 5 years he has been playing live at some of Chicago’s premier dive bars and music venues. The set-up and number of band mates varies from show to show: sometimes blues-punk, sometimes murder ballads, always odd. His sound has been compared to a mixture of Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, Eels, and Nick Cave. Monica Kendrick of the Chicago Reader called him “a singer-songwriter working at a riveting level of energy and charisma.” She adds, “guitar and harmonica blare and rattle and chug like the soundtrack to a rail-riding hobo’s apocalyptic nightmare—like Captain Beefheart is back and he wants to kill you.”
Otter Petter – Friday, 8/27
Otter Petter is the four-piece rock outfit you’d hate to take off. Formed in Chicago in 2005, Otter Petter delivers “big, bright, hooky tunes with their hearts pinned proudly on their sleeves” (Chicago Reader). Otter Petter’s members include brothers Michael (guitar, vocals) and William Pritchard (drums), Raphael Dussaussoy (guitars, keyboards) and Amy Anderson (bass, vocals).
During the last two years, the band has performed throughout the Midwest and East Coast, pausing occasionally to work on new recordings; this resulted in 2008’s full-length, self-released album “Fireflies And Lamp Lights,” which was greeted with glowing reviews. The melodies found within are “devastatingly infectious” (New City), and described as a “perfect blend of roots rock, sugary pop and complex indie rock” (Gapersblock.com).
American Motherload – Saturday, 8/28
After a three-year hiatus, ”Chicago’s most notorious” AMERICAN MOTHERLOAD, returns to the Double Door for a special summer reunion show. Formed in 1999, American Motherload has toured the country supporting many national acts promoting their full-length album, “Come to Life”(2005). The band delivers pure American hard rock with stellar lead vocals by Ben Loop; the fire-laden guitars of Ray Rokicki, and tighter than tight rhythm section of Geoff Jania on bass guitar, Gary Kessler, keyboards; and Robert Harrison on drums. Expect some set-list surprises, as well as a hell of a after-party to follow the show…
This event is the band’s only summertime Chicago-area performance and is not one to be missed. Also, very special friend and host of the evening, Herb Rosen(Liar’s Club)as MC.
Papa Jupiter, who is playing a free show here at Double Door next Tuesday August 3, has an amazing, incredibly vivid and graphic band bio:
“Papa Jupiter sounds like guns and bloody skulls with holes drilled into them and then filled in with ghost pepper salsa, then drunk by devil worshipping teenagers, spit back out and carmelized with a blowtorch and cryogenically frozen until the year 2210, then reheated, eaten and digested, and pumped through future plumbing systems by the lizard people that came up from underground in the year 2014 and took over the world.”
RiotFest 2010 is here! We are really excited to be a part of the festivities this year, and are very proud to announce that Corrosion of Conformity, Cro-Mags, Keith Morris, and Negative Approach will be gracing Double Door’s stage! RAGE!

The Rememberwhens are playing a Double Door Dirtroom show this coming Sunday, July 25 with Kelroy, Turbo Controller and Warhellride. This is the Rememberwhens’ biography from their Myspace page:
“Rememberwhens in Bill and Teds Bogus Adventure when they traveled to the future to meet their future selves, and they were treated like Gods because it was music that apparently brought peace to the world and united everyone…so they brought their future selves to the present (which is the past for us now) to play in some talent show thing (with death on upright bass!) and their song was the greatest song ever and united the world??!?! YEAH….THATS PRETTY MUCH WHAT THE REMEMBERWHENS ARE.”
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but now also it’s in the eye of the voter. Women throughout Chicagoland are invited to create a profile and enter this first-of-its-kind pageant where the people will decide who gets crowned.
The pageant finals are tonight, July 12 right here at Double Door (1572 N. Milwaukee Ave). The ten finalists will compete over four categories: Introduction, Talent, Evening Gown, and Question & Answer. The evening will be hosted by emcee-comedian Coburn Flint, live music by The Jordan Years, and the three judge/commentators are Chicago hip hop legend Rhymefest, Jon Cotay (owner of Akira boutiques) and Leonor Vivanco (writer for RedEye). The people in the audience will be voting for who wins, but if you can’t attend the finals, you will still be able to watch through the live stream and vote.
When the doors open at 7pm catered food will be provided Club Fifty/50. Admission is $10, 21+, and the show starts at 8pm sharp.
Bob Schneider is no stranger to Double Door’s Stage. Tonight marks Bob’s sixth Double Door show in three years and the word of mouth on him keeps spreading. His newest album, Lovely Creatures, is arguably his best, featuring the single 40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet) and the fan favorite Tarantula.
A product of Austin, Texas’ diverse, eclectic music scene, Bob also fronts a few other bands, including The Scabs, Texas Bluegrass Massacre, and Lonelyland. When he isn’t on the road, he can often be found playing a show in one of Austin’s numerous bars and clubs on any given day of the week. Bob wears many musical hats, but his die-hard fanbase keeps coming back to hear his explorations of funk, pop, bluegrass, jazz, soul, blues, hip-hop, raunchy bar rock ‘n roll, and of course, his hilarious between-song banter.
Opening the show tonight is Smile Smile, the Male/Female folk-pop duo from Dallas, Texas. Doors open at 8pm, Smile Smile is on at 9pm, and Bob Schneider is on at 10pm.
See a side of the Melvins you’ve never seen before, as they come to Double Door to challenge the staff in an intense Wiffleball match… before performing a blistering set of rock music.
Every player gets five swings per round as they try to accumulate homeruns, hit from in front of the stage towards our balcony. That’s the only way to score. No running, no fielding, just the mashing of homeruns. Each hitter chooses his/her pitcher. It’s a homerun derby.
The high profile Melvins come into the game with a high powered offense led by Buzz Osborne. They will have their hands full with Double Door’s behind the scene crew of Wiffleball rock stars.
Doors open at 6:30 only to the first 50 customers with tickets to the 8pm show ($25), tickets can also be purchased at that time. Beer, liquor and hotdogs will be available.
