Shelley Miller isn't afraid to take chances. A writer's writer, less interested in genre than honesty, she pens darkly soulful tunes about life just outside the lines. Folk? Perhaps...late-night jukebox folk. Gospel for non-believers folk. Had-one-too-many-and-lived-to-tell folk. Rock hymns for the unhemmed folk.

A versatile guitarist/multi-instrumentalist and intensely emotional performer, Shelley has performed at venues and festivals around the country including: The National Women's Music Festival, The Old Town School of Folk Music, the Chicago Country Music Festival and The Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. And after a decade of playing solo and acoustic, she's got a band, Shelley Miller and the BCC (Christopher Elam - guitar/piano/vox; Chris Geisler - bass; Brian Chinino - drums), an electric guitar, and a feisty new batch of songs to go with.

Shelley's released her fourth album, February, in spring 2012. A noisier, more eclectic affair than her first three albums, February finds Miller enlisting the piano, banjo, electric guitar and a cadre of toy instruments (and other local musicians) to help weave her stories. Special guests include Allison Russell (Po'Girl) on vocals and Joe Darnaby (Brighton, MA) on guitar.

Shelley's released her third album, When It's All Gone, You Come Back with a standing-room only show in March 2010. Featuring support appearances by members of Dolly Varden, Brighton, MA, The Micah Walk Band and Moxie Motive, When It's All Gone..." showcases Miller's captivating voice and deepening maturity as a songwriter. Hailed by the AltCountryForum blog as "an absolute must", When It's All Gone... has received airplay on radio stations, podcasts and web stations around the world.

Miller's songs have won awards in the Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest, Indiegrrl Songwriting Contest, Blooming-Tunes Songwriting Contest, A Call to Arts Song and Music Contest and the Just Plain Folks Songwriting Contest. In addition to her four albums, she has appeared on the acclaimed Bloodshot Records 2007 release 'Songbook: Volumes 2 and 3', and on compilations released by Waterbug Records and SBS Records.

In addition to her solo work, Shelley has lent her voice and guitar skills to numerous other artists, both live and in the studio. She teaches guitar, songwriting and Wiggleworms at the Old Town School of Folk Music. When not playing music, Shelley can often be found careening her bicycle through the streets of Chicago...singing.

Shane Leonard’s interest in songwriting and the banjo wasn’t passed down from family, as is tradition for most of the musicians he's come to admire, and he didn’t grow up anywhere near Appalachia. But then again, his music isn't exactly traditional. Imbued with the kind of countrified instrumentation heard most often in stringbands and old country music, armed with lyrics of a poet's caliber, and
delivering songs that shape-shift their way through a range of lush sounds and emotion, this is music moving ever-onward while remaining keenly aware of the past.

Leonard's path to his current project, Kalispell, has certainly been a winding one. Beginning drum lessons at age 5, he studied jazz until becoming absorbed by the playing of Bela Fleck in high school, at which time he rented a banjo and took lessons at the local music store. Later he studied English education at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and formed the band Lowtel with friends Sean Carey (Bon Iver), Jeremy Boettcher (S. Carey) and John Dehaven. Leonard avoided studying music at college after receiving the advice "you don't need a degree to play"; however, he managed to learn fiddle, mandolin, and guitar while earning a teacher's license and opening for artists such as Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Megafaun.

In the years following college, Leonard moved back and forth between Connecticut, Massachusetts and Wisconsin, teaching high school and busking at night to make a living. During this time he also performed and recorded with MIT's Gamelan Galak-Tika under the direction of Evan Ziporyn in addition to releasing records with Kalispell, stringband Stoop Singers, and jazz trio Gryn Gryn. In the process, Leonard studied with master banjoists Bob Carlin and Lee Sexton, fiddler Clyde Davenport, and taught courses in West African drumming and American roots music through the Exploration School at Yale University.

Kalispell released its debut album, Westbound, to wide critical praise in May of 2012. A busy life of teaching and music rendered it six years in the making, and in that time, the songs changed and deepened with the retelling. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Leonard played most of the central instruments on the record, but a talented and eclectic backing band featuring Ben Lester (Field Report, AA Bondy), Kevin Rowe (The Barley Jacks) composer David Sumner and others were also on hand. The result is a unique mix of clawhammer banjo and pedal steel guitar, of old-timey Appalachian traditions as in "Methodist Lift" and the ethereal, ambient music of songs like "Sepia Ghost." The piercing lyrics of "Lucky a Hundred Times" are matched by startling gratitude ("sighing at the cold bedside / 'mother, won't you tell me when it feels likes flying?'") and the heartache of watching helplessly as a loved one struggles alone in "Marion, MT" is lifted with "swallow the stream you can't swim." Leonard closes the album with the title song, singing "My heart is where I started / I am westbound."

Brendan Losch
28-year-old singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, Brendan Losch, manipulates your typical range of instruments like the guitar and keyboard, but supplements his melodies with more lively instruments like the glockenspiel, lap steel, banjo, melodica, and musical saw. Born into a musical family in suburban Chicago, Brendan picked up his first instrument, the clarinet, in the 5th grade. He then picked up the guitar in the 6th grade and has been creating music ever since.

Inspired by life experiences and the surrounding environment, Brendan composes a heartfelt sound imbued with intimate chords, melodic vocals and simple yet contemplative lyrics. His infectious harmonies will remind you of the loved blanket you slip around your shoulders on a chilly fall night.

In January 2005 he teamed up with friend Frankie Holthouse (Plug-In Studio) to record Better The Second Time, his first solo EP. In the fall of 2006, Brendan himself recorded and mixed his debut full-length record Listen With Your Heart, which was then mastered by Mike Nau (Page France/Cotton Jones). Until We Meet Again, a collection of some lo-fi demos, was released in early 2008, while Brendan also embarked on a project to write and record one brand new song a week.

Playing at well-known venues in Chicago such as Schubas, Beat Kitchen, Bottom Lounge, and Subterranean has enabled Brendan to establish himself as a respected musician. He has shared the stage with popular acts such as Nicole Atkins & the Sea, Bowerbirds, The Dodos, Greg Laswell, Jenny Owen Youngs, Phosphorescent, Brooke Waggoner, Joshua James, Cotton Jones, Surfer Blood, Golden Shoulders, Rue Royale, Horse In The Sea, etc. His websites (myspace, purevolume, virb) provide a nice place to sit back, relax, and listen to his latest work of art.

Currently, Brendan is writing/recording as much as possible. A new record, Low, is in the works and will feature nine tracks. As for shows, Brendan is mostly playing in the Midwest, but will one day hit the road and tour.
