...in late 2009 after walking around the city and seeing numerous flyers for soul nights. An idea formed. Why not have one night with a delegate from each soul group/crew to celebrate the different types of early soul sounds currently being represented in the city? The idea sprang into action and soon we had three 'residents', Dave Mata, Duke Grip, and Sloppy White. With these three DJs at the core, we also included a rotating roster of guests each month. The original purpose was to challenge attendees with different sounds and to not have a solidified format. Most important, the night is not about the guests but above all the music. With no preference to 'rare' records but records aimed for the dance floor regardless of how rare or common. Soul Summit is not about a 'scene' or alienation. We encourage all people from walks of life to come listen and celebrate early soul music.

Brooklyn's own Truth & Soul records, the funk/soul imprint that is responsible for monstrous acts like Lee Fields and The Expressions and El Michels Affair, and Lady hired Akalepse five years ago to bring his expertise to the label. Now Akalepse is a jack of all trades for the label, from Label Manager to Head of A&R to house DJ.
Today you can find Akalepse continuing to bring that raw, heavy, fun, sexy, soulful and honest music. His ability to run the full spectrum of soul music has officially become what he's known and respected for. Akalepse and Philly-bred DJ Rich Medina run the worldwide respected weekly party PROPS in Manhattan, playing classics right next to "Are they really playing this out?!?"-type obscurities. This night, like many of Akalepse's other parties before it is about pushing music forward and promoting culture. In that way, it's reflective of the choices and moves he's made, and the high regard in which his craft is kept. We're excited to have have Ak back (he spun at February's party) to help us celebrate 4 years of Soul Summit!
