Wreaking havoc with their third Small Stone release, Sasquatch lead the way with their fiery brand of rock n' roll. You'll hear 70's hard rock mixed with a dash of metal carried by an unmistakable undercurrent of psychedelic sounds which permeate their songs. The hook is the focus and that's exactly what they do - hook you in and hold you hostage with a super-heavy, bone-crunching onslaught carrying you from one tight tune to another, leaving you eager with anticipation. Sasquatch will not only knock you on your ass, their collective boot will keep you pinned to the ground.
The band was formed in Los Angeles in 2001 by Philadelphia transplant Keith Gibbs (guitar, vox) and Detroit natives Rick Ferrante (drums) and Clayton Charles (bass). Upon Clayton’s departure in 2007, the guys recruited Chicagoan Jason Casanova (ex-Tummler, Volume) to join the fold. Drawing on influences from 70's metal, rock, and psychedelia, the band falls somewhere between an amalgamation of Black Sabbath, old Soundgarden, Deliverance-era Corrosion of Conformity, Mountain, and a bastardized version of Grand Funk Railroad. Their songwriting approach is clear; keep the focus on the hook.
The band’s newest album “III” was released on Small Stone Records in March 2010 and marked the beginning of a new chapter for the band. While this record continues to showcase their signature sound and technique, the production is bigger and the songwriting is more refined. Combining the simplicity of their Small Stone debut, “I” (released in 2004), with the melodic undercurrent of “II” (2006), they still manage to capture the raw essence that won them their moniker. The record also features a special guest appearance from Monster Magnet’s own Ed Mundell.
The band’s music has been featured on a variety of movies and television shows including the reissue of Clerks, FX’s original hit series Sons of Anarchy, A&E's Dog The Bounty Hunter, Jersey Girl, CW’s The Supernatural, and MTV’s Viva La Bam, Bam’s Unholy Union, and Rob and Big. They can also be heard on a number of video games including NHL 2005, American Chopper, and Monster Garage. Over the years, Sasquatch has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Blue Cheer, Fireball Ministry, Nebula, Unida, Solace, Roadsaw, Fatso Jetson, and Yawning Man among many other heavy hitters in the genre. Playing in such good company and performing at many of the larger annual rock festivals stateside (including SxSW, CMJ, and SHoD), the band has grown from a local heavy favorite in Southern California to garnering interest and praise from audiences overseas.
SUPLECS is raw, heavy rock from New Orleans. They blend the sounds of New Orleans with their own unique style of heavy metal. Their debut album “wrestlin’ with my lady friend” was released by renowned artist, Frank Kozik’s label, Mansruin Records in April of 2000. It received rave reviews and in 2002 Suplecs released their 2’nd full length “sad songs…better days” on Mansruin and later re-released on This Dark Reign/Devil Doll Records. This album has the same intensity as the first with much more diversity and better production. The songs are written with room for improvising for an extra treat for the audience. Dave Fortman of Ugly Kid Joe fame produced it. He also produced other New Orleans acts such as Super Joint Ritual, Clearlight, EHG, as well as all of the major label projects he’s doing right now. Suplecs has a brand new album entitled "poutin' on the outside pawty on the inside" This one was produced by Pepper Kennan of CoC, Down. ..Suplecs consists of Durel Yates (guitars, vocals), Danny Nick (bass, vocals) and Andrew Preen (Drums). Durel and Danny have been playing in bands now for over 10 years and started Suplecs with Andrew in 1996. Each member was born and raised in the Crescent City. ..Suplecs has done about 6 full U.S tours and toured throughout Canada. They’ve toured with acts such as Clutch, High on Fire, Eyehategod, ATP and many more. They’ve played the Warp Tour, the SXSW Festival 4 years in a row and the CMJ festival. The video for the song “rock bottom” is scheduled to play on the Headbangers Ball on Mtv. Suplecs was also featured in High Times Magazine and “sad songs..better days” was picked as one of the top 10 records of 2002 and six of their songs were played on Fox Sports Net for Bluetorch T.V.
There is a hidden world where ancient evil weaves a modern mystery. A world filled with the darkest magic's where all movement is caused by tensions between positive and negative furies. A world in which the furies, when out of balance, turn into demon and live forever. A creature of fast dark destructive power. Repulsive and evil existing only to plague the living as they do with LO-PAN, who is cursed. Cursed with rock and roll genius. Born out of a combination of dirty rock and roll, stale beer and an unhealthy obsession with "Big Trouble In Little China," Columbus's Lo-Pan have been tearing up the club circuit since 2005. Lo-Pan burst onto the local scene with their locally released self-titled album back in 2006. The local buzz gave way to more national attention as bands told bands and Lo-Pan began gracing venues big and small with names like Red Giant, Devil To Pay, Torche, Saviours, Year Long Disaster, Red Fang, Valkyrie, & the Atomic Bitchwax (just to name a few). Fast forward five years and there's hardly a band worth playing with that they haven't shared a stage with. Enter the sophomore release, "Sasquanaut." Initial pressings on local indie Nice Life Records sold out quickly and as before the best praise is when one band on the road tells another "Hey, man you've got to check this out." Which brought them, album masters in hand to us here at Small Stone. "Sasquanaut" had all the makings of a classic, thunderous low ends, pummeling drums, riffs to die for and a voice that soars but for all the genius that shone through it was still rough around the edges (don't get us wrong we love rough around the edges). So we checked them in to a proper studio and left them in the capable hands of Benny Grotto for a little remixing, a little re-mastering and just ever so much re-recording. Enter Sasquanaut, mark 2: "Sasquanaut (Remixed & Re-mastered)." Heavier, more dynamic, louder and just that tiny bit more polished, this is the album that bands and fans new they could make. Mere words just can't do justice to the effect that a little more time and the proper equipment have had on these eight raging tracks. Maybe a quote from the bands namesake might sum it up. "When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." The boys heads back into the studio for a proper follow-up this fall and look for the band on tour this winter and remember IT'S ALL IN THE REFLEXES!
Hailing from the barrier dunes of Virginia, this quartet blends heavy riffs, a rolling groove, and soulful guitar melodies to produce the sound that is Freedom Hawk. Their brand of heavy rock coupled with a high energy live show, leaves many wondering if they’ve stepped through a time warp that has taken them to rock’s heyday of the 70’s.
The origins of Freedom Hawk began in 2003 when friends Mark Cave (bass) and TR Morton (guitar; singer) were introduced to Lenny Hines (drums) through a mutual friend. Mark and TR had been jamming together for some time and could not find the right drummer to match what they were playing. Once they brought Lenny into the fold, the two knew they found the drummer they were looking for. Now a trio, the three realized their songs were missing a certain dynamic that would be required to achieve what they wanted to hear. In comes Matt Cave (guitar). Matt had been working with another band in the Virginia Beach area at the time and knew his brother Mark was looking for a second guitar player. After a few successful sessions and the eventual request by his brother Mark to join the group, Matt decided to be the fourth and final addition.
A quote in Performer Magazine from a live show states: “[Freedom Hawk is] East Coast's answer to Fu Manchu, keeping it simple and thick with harmonious metal groove. It wasn't heavy riffs and growls, but power riffs and soulful rock delivery wrapped in metal packaging. Freedom Hawk's sound is large, like trying to force an elephant to fit in a closet. It is also melodic for such heavy handed playing. Walls of guitar riffs were pushed out heavy, soaring and moving like swells and waves at the same time."
