After years in the making here at last is Illumination, the fully realized debut album from Melbourne’s favourite psychedelic indie-electronic adventurers Miami Horror. With Illumination, Miami Horror has delivered on two years of teeth-cutting live shows and an ever escalating wave of buzz that’s made the group bonafide blog darlings the world over. But what’s most amazing about the grand arrival of Illumination is that the roots of the record stretch back countless moons to when Miami Horror began as just one synthesizer-obsessed producer huddled over a laptop in a bedroom-come-studio and the album itself just a spark waiting to be lit.
The afore mentioned synth tragic was, and let’s face it still is, electronic young gun Ben Plant, who kick started Miami Horror out of a love of Roland keyboards a
nd French house, landing himself on Pitchfork’s hot-list overnight and copping a barrage of high profile remix requests from the likes of Datarock, PNAU and The Presets.
Yet it was while Ben was punching out 2008’s epochal Bravado EP that Miami Horror took off in a completely new and different direction. Characteristically wanting
to flex his creative muscle and avoid the limitations of being stereotyped as simply a dance or electro act, Ben rewired Miami Horror’s genetic makeup, deputising the talents of Josh Moriarty, Aaron Shanahan and Daniel Whitechurch to form a new live band persona of Miami Horror, a whole new beast immeasurably more exciting than before.
“It started out that I didn’t want to have any guitar on the album besides a little funk guitar or disco bass,” Ben grins while explaining the turning point for
Miami Horror’s evolution. “But then Josh came in and started playing all these other parts that sounded amazing. Paired with what I was working on, nobody was doing anything like it, so I knew we had to turn those sounds into a live thing and just go wild.”
All this time Ben had been further noodling away at Miami Horror’s long-awaited debut disc and with the vision for a fully-blown and creatively shared band now fulfilled Miami Horror was able to pour all of their energy into Illumination, the record that’s taken Miami Horror years to perfect and Ben a whole lifetime to get right.
Midnight Conspiracy (DJ set)
“Midnight Conspiracy have surpassed the label of “up-and-coming”, and have established themselves as relevant contributors to remix artistry.” – Aux
“Fast becoming one of the most coveted remix groups around.” –themahoganyblog
“If you haven’t heard of Midnight Conspiracy and you live in the Chicago area, I’m willing to bet you don’t get out much.” –redthreat
“[Their] multifaceted approach to club culture has caught the eyes and ears of Chicago’s college-age masses—no small feat.” -Time Out Chicago
Since their official debut in January, it's been hard keeping up with the flurry of releases from Chicago party-throwers Midnight Conspiracy these past few months. Their latest remix, a synth-heavy italo take on Crystal Castles’ “Vietnam” reached the #2 spot on Hype Machine’s most popular charts in it’s first week of release, making it the 4th time they’ve reached the #2 spot on Hype Machine, and their 5th time in the Top 5. The song joins the ever-growing list of Midnight Conspiracy’s other successful offerings, including a dreamy dubstep re-imagining of Esser’s pop anthem “Headlock”, which was featured on BBC Radio 1 on the Kissy Sell Out Show, a spacey update of Crystal Castles’ classic “Crimewave”, which was released in support of the band’s new album and HARD Summer Tour, and Midnight Conspiracy’s first release, an italo-electro version of Chromeo’s “Night By Night”.
Co-conspirators Graham Geren, Louis Kha, and Mikul Wing don't intend to slow down any time soon; Straight off their first official “Dead Fame” Tour this past summer, and following up performances at SXSW in Austin and WMC in Miami, Midnight Conspiracy will bring their dirty electro rock on the road again this fall touring with Innerpartysystem. Not limited to just beats, they also boast a clothing line, and Midnight Conspiracy street art can be found in cities along their tour route. They’re set to release heavier official remixes of Editors, Innerpartysystem and fellow Chicagoans Lucky Date and Gemini Club.
"Unless you're so cutting edge it hurts, you probably haven't heard of Codebreaker yet -- and we're stressing the word "yet." Definitely one to watch: The sound recalls some crazy house party where Cameo is drinking with Prince, Phoenix is partying with Daft Punk and Bootsy Collins is jamming on the sofa. The band's "Dream Lover" -- is the best damn dance song heard in ages, thanks to a rubbery bassline, jumpy guitars and synths that don't overwhelm the vocals.."
-The Washington Post
"Diamond's voice goes through the occasional spooky high-pitched effect or whirling overdub as she sings about, yes, a "fire"-- "right down in your soul," no less. She sounds as quietly commanding as ever, but the production is the real focus, with g-funk synths, plus funky guitar, rubbery bass, vocoder, and crisp drums that settle into the background except for the occasional Caribbean-sounding fill or castanets. All right, so there's a little fire, and judging by the smoke machines it's burning the world through."
