Every once in a while, you hear a record by an unknown band that just completely blows you away. Even rarer is an indie pop record that doesn't sound derivative. The Webstirs' "Rocket to the Moon" falls into both those categories. The Webstirs are a Chicago-area group with a couple of indie releases under their belts, but "Rocket to the Moon" is a minor masterpiece. POP CULTURE PRESS

There’s this song by Ned’s Atomic Dustbin (remember them?) whose title I always liked: “The Old New Un.” I always figured that it meant they’d taken an old idea and made something fresh from it; then again, maybe it’s about fish and chips. Anyway, I heard that song not long ago, and it made me think about Maritime. Dan Didier, who plays the drums, said something to me—and he said it sincerely, not giving me some marketing spiel—about how Heresy and the Hotel Choir, his band’s third album, really feels like their first.
Why is that, you ask? There’s a reason, and it doesn’t discount the contemplative, mellow chewiness of 2004’s Glass Floor or the comparatively brash rockingess of 2006’s We, The Vehicles. It’s just to say that those records (and subsequent tours) were inspired by the energy of flux, and this one is about solidity. Glass Floor took tentative steps away from Didier and singer-guitarist Davey von Bohlen’s old band, the damn-near-legendary Promise Ring (remember them?), adding former Dismemberment Plan bassist Eric Axelson to the mix. Slow chaos followed: Somewhere in there, Axelson left; other people came and went, all amicably. A string of superstar guitarists did some Maritime business: Mike Kinsella (Joan of Arc, Owen), Matt Clark (Pinebender, Bella Lea), Mike Feurstack (Wooden Stars, Snailhouse), Slash (GnR, I’m lying). For a while, the current drummer of The Arcade Fire, Jeremy Gara, played keyboards. (I’m not making that up.) Naturally, amid all the personnel hoo-ha, energies changed.
But here’s why you’re looking at something through fresh eyes, and why Maritime is, too: Things settled, as things do. Justin Klug took the four-string slot, and longtime contributor Dan Hinz—he played guitar on Vehicles—became full-fledged member Dan Hinz. (He is known to his bandmates and the Japanese as “Chicken Dan.”) And the band started writing songs like bands should—in a room together, rocking like the young people they still are. When these four got done writing songs, they didn’t need to recruit people or scramble to get a lineup together. They just went out and played them, together, and shot them full of life.

Astral Planes * Toro! Toro! Toro!
The Lorimer Sound * Haywood Yards
Doors: 8:00PM Show: 9:00PM
$5
Hailing from Chicago via distances great and small, their former homes read like a Howard Dean campaign speech, "In Illinois and Michigan and Sweden!" And Sweden? The Swedish import looks to a tennis court and finds a like-minded musical partner. Two Michiganders later, the Astral Planes are whole. The resulting sound is vast, not unlike the great expanse of Superior, Michigan, Huron. Astral strains of Rickenbackers ring over the reliable rhythms of Detroit and meandering bass lines of a two-lane scenic drive. Meanwhile, the Swedish son charts a spatial niche of human experience as he ponders the resolution of a Major 9th chord. Practicing their craft in musical outfits such as insta and Kendokwan, the Astral Planes hit the runway with a smooth landing for their live debut in early 2005. Successive performances at Subterranean, Beat Kitchen and Andersonville's Midsommarfest find the band climbing to a cruising altitude that threatens to exit the very atmosphere itself. Fly with us, enjoy the ride and deplane with the hazy warmth of a drink-filled transcontinental flight.

One Night Only...
Anthrax (Featuring New Vocalist Dan Nelson)
Doors: 8:00PM Show: 9:00PM
$20
Anthrax is excited and proud to introduce their new singer, Dan Nelson. Nelson is a virtual unknown, having fronted several local bands in the Long Island/New York area in the past. Says drummer Charlie Benante, "Rob [Caggiano] called me and said, 'I have a singer, you should check him out.' We gave him a shot, and he floored us."
After a successful reunion tour with former singer Joey Belladonna in 2006, there were rumors of recording a new album with that lineup. However, talks fell through and the band was left, once again, without a singer. Enter Dan Nelson.
"I was actually looking for a band," commented Nelson. "Long Island, NY is a pretty dead scene. I was in Unbroken, and through that I met Rob a couple years ago. I had gone through some stuff on a personal side where I took time off from the music. When I got back to the scene, I couldn't find a band, so I contacted Rob through MySpace and offered my services. We sent music back and forth, got together, and jammed for 10 hours straight. After 10 hours, he said, 'I think you'd be right for Anthrax."
"There's no place else I'd rather be right now," Nelson said. "It's a great vibe. I feel great, and I'm ready to go. It's lit that much more of a fire under me. I'm getting to live the dream, and it feels amazing. I can't wait for all these people who think Anthrax is done to be proven wrong. The naysayers are gonna be shut down, and the true blue fans are gonna be pleased."
